Welcome back to a new year of school!  We’re so excited to be back in the swing of things and are hopeful that your transition from last school year to this one has been smooth.

The start of the school year can be vastly different for every family.  For example we heard this story from one family:

In my home, my oldest has been a whirlwind of emotions for the past two weeks, worrying about friends in different classes, her math skills, getting to know a new teacher…the list goes on.  I think we discovered the root of her problem, though: she’s just tired.  We’ve been lazy about getting her to bed at a really good time, rushing through our morning to get where we need to be and not really focusing on her needs when her busy day is done.

With this hard lesson being learned, we’re working on s-l-o-w-i-n-g down (it’s super hard, believe me).  We have opted not to join soccer or dance or the after school reading club for the moment, just so we can focus on getting back to a new normal.  After school, instead of running here or there, we’re at home reading books, playing in and outdoors, listening to music.  I think we’re finally starting to see a difference.  Fears are slowly going away, emotions are tapering off, and a solid routine is taking form.  We’ll eventually get back to a few of those activities that she adores, but for the time being, focusing on what she truly needs is most important.

Thankfully we have a choice in education here in Ohio. As many of you have experienced first hand, having the option to put your child in the best learning environment for them can make all the difference in the world.
