Play dates. Pool days. Visits to Grandma’s house. Summer break is here. If your kids are anything like mine, they’re looking forward to taking a break from school-related activities.
Wanting to keep their skills from the past school year fresh and constantly improving, I’ve decided to seek out some fun ways to get them excited about reading. Almost all local libraries in our state will offer some kind of summer reading program with incentives for kids who read often. There are also many programs offered online; some have great rewards for reading a certain number of minutes.
Reading doesn’t have to be done solely by the kids themselves. Getting other family members involved can be fun and can offer the reader and listeners new ways of learning. Encourage your kids to read different types of books and try asking questions about what they’ve read. Offer up your own reaction and opinion to what’s happening in their book.
Check out the list of summer reading programs below and let us know how your book worms are doing this summer over on our Facebook page!
